Why Organic?

We are all concerned about the health and well-being of our children.  Much research has been done to investigate the possible links between exposure to pesticides and children's health.  While more studies are needed to show any definite links between the two, we don't want to risk our babies' health by choosing the most convenient options over the safest. Our products contain No Lead, No Phthalates, No harsh bleaches, and No poisonous chemicals! We would like to share some information about why we believe that Organic Cotton products are a better choice for your baby than conventional cotton products.

1. Dangerous Pesticide usage in cotton Production

Interestingly, up until the 1950s global cotton production occurred predominantly without the use of hazardous agrochemicals. [1] However as of today, conventionally grown (Non-Organic) cotton uses more pesticide than any other single crop.  Cotton is responsible for US $2 billion in chemical pesticides each year. According to the Pesticide Action Network, an astonishing 150g of pesticide is used to cultivate enough cotton for just one T-shirt. People might think that these pesticides are not so dangerous to humans since the pesticides passed government regulations.  However, at least US$819 million in pesticides used for cotton are toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organization.   The Environmental Justice Foundation reported one of the worst pesticides used on cotton called, “Aldicarb” is a powerful nerve agent and the 2nd most applied pesticide to cotton worldwide including the U.S.  Even one drop of “aldicarb” absorbed through the skin is known to be enough to kill an adult [2].

2. Baby skin is more sensitive than adults.

There is little evidence in humans that chronic, low level exposure to pesticide cause health problems.  However according to George Washington University Medical Center Website [3] , several animal studies have shown that exposure to low doses of even widely used household pesticide may cause permanent changed in brain chemistry and behavior.  Another study published in October 2007 by Public Health Institute, California Department of Health Services suggested the possible link between Autism Spectrum Disorders and agricultural pesticides.  In addition to that, Infant skin has special needs.  Skin is an important sensory organ and a baby’s first to be shared outside world.  Infants have higher skin surface area to weight ratio than adults, therefore infant skin has greater absorption of environmental irritants such as pesticides or any other chemicals. That’s one of the reasons why there are lotions, oils and powders designed and tested especially for infants.   Every parent knows that infants tend to put things in their mouths.  Protection of your babies from unwanted chemicals starts with good information about products and better purchasing decisions.

3. Pesticide harms farmers and the environment.

Farmers in the developing world are responsible for producing 75% of global cotton.  Additionally, the low level of safety awareness and lack access to adequate protective gear combined with high illiteracy and poor labeling of pesticides exacerbates pesticide poisonings among farmers.  Despite being particularly vulnerable to poisoning, child labor is used in cotton production throughout the developing world.  Children are often the first victims of the pesticide positioning even if they do not participate to spraying due to the proximity of their homes to cotton fields and the pesticide residues which family members who work with the pesticides bring home.
